Jeida's Gems 001: On Writer's Block

Writers everywhere face writer's block (whether you believe it exists or not) from time to time. I tend to call it a case of the silent Muse. My Muse isn't normally blocked but she does grow quiet for lots of reasons (but more on that another time). So, here is how I coax my Muse to come out of hiding.

I set a timer (10 or 15 minutes) and I don’t let my fingers stop moving until the timer goes off. Sounds easy enough but not always.

So, what do I do when I get to a stopping point or a momentary stall, and my brain slows the words down?

I write the last written word repeatedly (as if it’s an echo) until the next word comes to me. It’s like a record skipping in my mind. It keeps me present in that scene and gives my Muse time to hand the next word to me. Before long, my fingers are typing away at lightning speed.

Example: "Yeah, I see how you're hanging onto my every word. You want to know what happened next with me and the girl with the yellow dress dress dress dress..."

Next time you get stuck, try it. Let me know how it works for you!
